In 2007, Saskatchewan Agriculture & Food approached the Sun Ridge Group with a request to design and deliver a farm energy evaluation pilot project. The purpose of the project was to make agriculture producers more aware of where and how energy can be used more efficiently on the farm and in farming operations.
Trained farm energy evaluators travelled to individual farms to collect information for the years 2007, 2006 and 2005 including the volume of fuel purchased, amount of fertilizer applied, acres seeded, number of applications of pesticides and herbicides and grain and livestock production.
Each producer participant was given a Farm Energy Evaluation Report, which included an overview of their farm, a technical report with the results of their evaluation, a district report comparing their results with others in their agro-climatic zone and in the province, energy saving tips, things to consider to make their farming operation more energy efficient, references supporting the considerations, and tracking sheets to record future energy use.
The pilot project was completed on April 15, 2009.
